Em contato com o ar frio a parte superior se solidifica, mas por baixo dela a lava quente continua a fluir. \u00c0 medida que o fluxo diminui forma-se uma cavidade entre o teto solidificado e o solo, conhecida como tubo de lava, e que pode ter v\u00e1rios km. de comprimento.
