Os cientistas v\u00e3o perfurar at\u00e9 1.500 m. de profundidade para procurar pistas que indiquem como a vida ressurgiu ap\u00f3s o cataclismo, e se a cratera serviu de ber\u00e7o para o surgimento de nova vida microbiana. A cratera tem 180 km. de di\u00e2metro e est\u00e1 h\u00e1 800 m. abaixo do n\u00edvel do mar, no Golfo do M\u00e9xico. O aster\u00f3ide tinha 10 km. de di\u00e2metro.
