O nível do mar abaixou 25 m. desde o século passado, e agora, em ritmo acelerado, vem diminuindo 1 m. por ano. O cais abandonado (foto) mostra onde estava o nível do mar há 25 anos atrás. O uso da água do mar em indústrias, desvios para o Rio Jordão, para uso na agricultura, e a evaporação, são os responsáveis pelo fato. A água disponível é usada e não é reposta. Atualmente o governo estuda a possibilidade de desviar água do Mar Vermelho para o Mar Morto.

Toda a água doce do mundo corresponde a 34 milhões de quilômetros cúbicos, incluindo rios, lagos e água submersa.

5 Carlos Eduardo Buchweitz, o Mar Morto é na verdade um lago de água salgada e é somente nesse lago que se vem perdendo 1,10m por ano. Em meio século se perdeu mais de 50 metros na profundidade do Mar Morto e não dos ocenanos todos.

Essas informações são do Instituto Geológico de Israel, que faz o monitoramento do nível do Mar do Morto.
Eles têm um navio chamado Birthright, que diariamente percorre o mar fazendo medições e avaliando os danos causados às suas margens.

Não existe vida marinha no Mar Morto, devido à alta concentração de variados tipos de sal, como cloreto de sódio, sulfato de magnésio, entre outros.
A proporção de sal considerada normal para um oceano é de 35 gramas de sal para cada litro de água. No Mar Morto tem 300 gramas para cada litro de água.
Nenhum peixe ou outro animal suporta viver nessa quantidade de sal.
